In 2009, the main competition was held on Saturday 21st November at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. The winners were south Manchester's Crystal Chords (see a reprise of their winning performance below). In second place were LGB choir The Pink Singers from London. In third place were Galloways Community Choir. The judges were Jeffrey Lawton, Senior Lecturer in Vocal Studies at the RNCM, Ian Chesworth, the well-respected local singer, organist and conductor and professional singer Margaret Ferguson, who has sung at venues as celebrated as the Royal Albert Hall. 2008's winners, Bolton's Cottontown Chorus, made a special guest appearance at the end of what was a truly memorable day.
There was also the new, MACC: Youth Choirs competition, which took place the following day on Sunday 22nd November, also at the RNCM. The winners were the Arden Youth Choir from Nelson, Lancashire, followed by the City of Leeds Youth Choir and in third place was Together, from Wirral Grammar School for Girls. Competing Youth Choirs also had the opportunity to take part in a variety of vocal and performance workshops throughout the day, courtesy of the Youth MACC's official partner, the RNCM Outreach Department. The judges for the MACC: Youth Choirs were the RNCM's Jeffrey Lawton, Shirley Court, Director of the Cheshire Youth Choir and the RNCM Youth Sing project and Gregory Batsleer, Director of the Halle Youth Choir and co-founder and Principal Conductor of the Manchester Consort.
Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks to the many choirs from all over the UK who came and took part in both competitions.
